Native Americans

Have you ever wondered about the Shawnees way of life, traditions, or culture? The Shawnees have a very interesting way life which is very different than how they live today. This can be discovered by where they live, what they needed to survive, and their culture.

The Shawnees live in many places and areas. The Shawnee Indians lived in the Northeastern region of the United States. Today the states are called Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and part of North Carolina. The Shawnee were an eastern woodland tribe that lived in the Appalachian Mountains and the Interior lowlands. The lands they lived in looked like forests and had a very normal climate. The Shawnee lived near numerous streams, rivers and lakes. The biggest source was the Great Lake. This is the where the Shawnees lived

The Shawnees were very smart with their basic needs. The Shawnee lived in lodges called Wigwams. They were made out of animal skins, barks and sticks. Wigwams were domed shaped which made them easier to heat in winter. The type of foods the Shawnee ate was corn, squash, beans and sweet potatoes. The women planted and took care of the crops. The women also gathered nuts and berries. The men hunted for buffalo and deer. The men would also fish and set traps for foxes, rabbits and other small animals. Shawnee clothing was made mostly from deer skins. The men wore leggins and skirts. The woman wore skirts and shirts. They both wore moccasins to protect their feet. The Shawnee dyed their clothing bright colors. This was the way Shawnees used their basic needs

The Shawnees had lots of interesting beliefs and customs. The Shawnees believed in gods that ruled over nature. They believed in a god named Kohkunthena. Children over four years old go through a ceremony called The Green Snake; a snake head is placed in the child’s mouth for a few seconds; this is supposed to bring good luck. Shawnees liked to move around to avoid colonist. They also moved around to avoid other indians. Shawnees have dances for women who work on the crops. This is a sign of thanks. The Shawnees had many more customs and beliefs but these are the most  interesting.

Overall the shawnees lived differently than they do now which can be seen through where they live, how they survived, and their customs. The Shawnees are still alive to this day.Hopefully they still embrace their customs and live the way they lived a long time ago.
