Alaska Geography

Imagine a  sparkling sunset as it sinks down into the mountains. As you see it, you really think that Alaska is truly the last frontier. Alaska’s weather is usually cold, rarely is the weather warm. This leads to less people and more animals living there. Since there are less humans, most of the land is allowed to grow. Alaska is truly the last frontier.

Alaska covers 663,267 square miles, which makes it the largest state in the United States. Although it is the largest state in the United States, it still has a very low population.

first region

Alaska has 7 land regions. The first land region is the North Slope. It is also known as the Midnight Sun, because the sun rises about May 10 and sets about August 1: 84 days later! Most of this region is tundra. The north slope’s ground is hard with permafrost. This region bares animals but not humans. This region might not inhabit lots of people but it is home to many animals.

second region

The second region is the region of Western Alaska. This region includes the Seward Peninsula. It also includes Nunivak island and Little Diomede island. Western Alaska  has lots of volcanic activity. Mount Pavlof, a fairly large volcano has erupted forty times since 1970..The Western Alaska region is also low in population, but it still has the second largest island in Alaska.

third region

The third region is the Aleutian region. It has craggy shores made up of 150 islands of pure volcanic ash. This region includes the Alaska peninsula and the Aleutian Archipelago. The Aleutian region has less trees than any other land regions in Alaska. Although it might not have lots of trees, it is the best place to see the Pacific Ocean.

fourth region

Full of gentle rolling  hills, the Interior region is the place to go in Alaska. This region has many large rivers and even the largest mountain in the state. The mountain is called Denali, which soars as high as 20,320 feet tall. Denali was named Mt. Mckinley, after President William Mckinley, for a while but was changed to Denali which was based on the name “Deenaalee” which means “high one”.

The Fifth Region

Just above the Gulf Of Alaska is the Southcentral Alaska region. Most people live here. The region is fairly cold with lots of glaciers. This region includes the Prince William Sound shore and a handful of volcanoes. The Southcentral Alaska region includes the largest city in Alaska, which is Anchorage.

Sixth Region

Known as the Panhandle the Southeastern Alaska, these groups of islands includes an area known as the Inside Passage. These coastlines are filled with inlets and peninsulas. This is defined by the water flow.

Conclustion

Alaska is a mountainous place with lovely lands. This is  a place where the land is hard with permafrost and lush green grasses. This lets animals graze, hunt, and keep shelter. If you stop and slow down you can truly see how beautiful Alaska is and how it is truly the last frontier.
