                                        D.A.R.E Essay

Did you know that tobacco companies’ products kill 40,000 people a month? There are many things you can learn in D.A.R.E. I have learned so many useful skills and other things such as, the effects of drinking, smoking, and taking drugs.

Did you know that you can have mouth cancer if you drink too much? That is why I will choose not to drink a lot when I am old enough. 88,000 people die each year from drinking. This is another reason I will choose not drink. I hate when I am not in control of my body, and that is what happens when you drink too much. You also get sick from indulging in too much alcohol.  Don’t you hate when you get tongue tied? When you drink too much, you get slurred speech. Other effects are delayed reflexes, stomach pains, nausea, and vomiting. All these reasons are great reasons I will choose to not drink excessively.

Smoking harms not only yourself but, everyone that is around you. There are many reasons why you should never smoke. The biggest reason you should never smoke is because it can give you cancers of the mouth, throat, lung or skin. Smoking can also give you rashes. Another bad thing that can happen could be your  lungs collapsing. If you are over a certain age, you may have seizures if you smoke. For these reasons, you should never pick up a cigarette.

Drugs are just bad for you. Over 41,000 people die from drug use each year. Like alcohol, you can lose control of your body and mind. Drugs can alter someone’s mood, thinking, and behavior, which, in my opinion, sounds awful. Drugs can affect you  mentally and physically. When the use of drugs are reduced or stopped, withdrawal symptoms may occur. These withdrawals can include fatigue, hunger, depression, reduced energy levels, irritability, agitation, insomnia, paranoia, aggression, anxiety or cravings for the drug. Knowing the facts, drug abuse is never a good thing, and can be dangerous and scary.  I choose to never participate in drug abuse.

In conclusion, I thank my D.A.R.E. officer, Lieutenant Whitt, for being a wonderful teacher, making me aware of the dangers of alcohol, smoking, and drugs. I have always enjoyed the D.A.R.E. program and thought it to be a wonderful opportunity to learn how to be safe and responsible. I hope to continue learning to be safe as I grow to be a responsible adult.
