                                        My Own Thanksgiving

My Thanksgiving is a little different from what most western families do. Most western families eat turkey and have rich desserts. However the traditions we do are a little different. Some traditions in my family are the main meal, the dessert, and family time

Some differences are the food we usually eat. We eat Hot pot as you can tell with the name that it’s a hot pot filled with water on a portable burner. Usually we set out a lot of sides and vegetables to be cooked in the pot like: lettuce, watercress, thinly sliced beef, a variety of fish cakes, enoki mushrooms, and a lot more. So you put the sides in the boiling water and let them cook. We usually have a sauce then you grab and eat.  Some of the vegetables and sides may sound exotic but they are normal to my family and me.

Another exotic thing we do is dessert. Sometimes we do dessert but sometimes we don’t because we’re so stuffed. When wen do, dessert is usually a light thing. It is not too heavy or we will feel fat and do nothing and stay around all day and that is bad. So we might have chewy glutinous rice balls in a sweet broth type of thing. Other times we might have boba or bubble tea (boba is a chew ball made out of tapioca flour) in a milk tea. I love it when my mom cooks because I have a warm gooey feeling to spread the love and God’s message over Thanksgiving and the holidays.

Family is one of my core parts about myself it’s important to me because they help me and support me in all I do. So during Thanksgiving morning I go get read as usual and go down stairs and try to watch the Macy’s Parade with my family. Last year my mom and sister were already bustling about preparing for Thanksgiving lunch but usually we do hot pot around dinnertime. During dinner, my dad would talk about successful people in the world and tell us Chinese stories. What I love about Thanksgiving is the memories that wraps it up.

The food, the dessert, and the family time is how my family celebrates our Thanksgiving traditions. What I love about the holidays, all of them, is the diversity mixed into everything that makes everyone feel at home. Sometimes being different isn’t so bad you just have to stop and think.
