                                    Holes Essay

Imagine a summer camp for boys. Except this is a different summer camp. The heat beats against every single part of their bodies. The campers hear a Pang pounding through their ears as a shovel hits the crust of the sun throbbed dirt.     They are in Camp Green Lake. This is the entire setting through the book and movie Holes. Even though the setting is the same, there are some major differences between the movie and the book Holes. Some of the differences are Kate and Sam’s kiss, the fighting scene in Green lake, and Kate Barlow’s death.

One of the differences between the book and movie Holes is the fighting scene in the town Green Lake. In the book, the boats crashed. Kate also was in the boat when the boat crashed, and she was rescued even though she didn’t want to be. In the movie, she didn’t meet with Sam so that meant she was not in the boat. Instead, she was watching on land and crying because of Sam’s death. I believe they made this change because the creators wanted to make it more dramatic and so it would not take up watch time. I liked the movie version better because it was more intense and you can imagine and see what it’s like.

Another difference I spotted was the kiss that Kate and Sam had in the book. Hattie Parker, a normal lady in Green Lake spotted them kissing and said, “God will punish you!” I also know that they were kissing in the rain. In the movie, Trout Walker, a man with a rich father who owned the lake in Green Lake, liked Ms. Katherine (Kate).  He asked her out but instantly got rejected. The night Kate and Sam were kissing, Trout saw but didn’t say anything and started that mini war. I also think the creators of the movie made this change because it would be more intense and cause the viewers to panic and wonder what’s going to happen next. I liked the book version of this scene better because in the book it was less scary than in the movie.

The last difference I spotted between the book and movie Holes  was how Kate Barlow died. Ms. Katherine became Kate Barlow, the fiercest outlaw because of Sam’s death. In the book, she was tortured by walking the sun throbbed dirt. She was also in the cabin when Trout came. In the movie, she was against  Sam’s boat. She picked up a lizard and forced herself to let the lizard bite her. I think the creators made this change because they thought it would take less watch time as well as making the viewers more entertained and make it more dramatic. I liked the book version better because it was more detailed than the movie .

Three major differences in the book and movie Holes are Kate and Sam’s kiss, the fighting scene in Green lake, and Kate Barlow’s death. I believe both are good stories;they both capture the same point. Even though the movie and the book Holes have some differences, the setting of Camp Green lake is the same. Sometimes it leaves us to think what would happen if the setting did change and how it would affect the story.
