Hole’s Differences Essay

Imagine digging in the flaming hot Sun all day and you’ve run out of water. Would you run away or stay and keep digging and eating canned food for the rest of your life? This is how the campers at Camp Green Lake had to live their lives in both the movie and the book Holes. Even though the book and the movie Holes look and sound the same they have some differences in them. Some major differences between the book and the movie Holes are the water on God’s thumb, Mr. Pendanski, and when Sam and Kate kissed.

One of the differences between the movie and the book Holes is the part where they climb up God's thumb and find water. In the book, Stanley dug a hole and found mud and knew there was water if there was mud.  Then, he kept on digging and when he found the water he gave it to Hector and that woke him up. In the movie, they climbed up Gods thumb and the water was visible and they started laughing and playing in the stream. They were also, splashing each other too. I think this change was made to save time. Also, seeing the water gives immediate excitement and satisfaction. I like the movie better because there is more excitement and that zero was woken up earlier.

Another difference between the movie and the book is about Mr./Dr. Pendanski. In the book, he is Mr. Pendanski he is tall, chubby, almost bald, has a long beard, and a sunburn on his nose. He is also, usually nice. In the movie, he is Dr. Pendanski, he’s short, has a short beard, skinny, hair on head, and no sunburn on his nose. He is mean the whole time. I think they made this change because they probably couldn’t find a person who looks exactly like Mr. pendanski in the book. I also, think they made him mean because it's supposed to be a bad camp. I like the book better because he’s a little bit nicer.

The last difference between the movie and the book  Holes is when Sam and Kate kissed. In the book, they were outside and kissed. Hattie Parker saw them and said “God will punish you”. In the movie, they kissed inside the schoolhouse. Trout saw them and didn’t say a word. I think they made this change because Trout was super rude and mean and they may have wanted a meaner person to spread the word. Also Hattie Parker wasn’t a character in the movie. I like the book better because Hattie Parker told and she’s a little more sassy and not as mean as Trout I feel like she tells it better too.

The water on God’s thumb, Mr. Pendanski, and when Sam and Kate kissed are some of the major differences between the movie and the book Holes. I like the book better because I think that it has more detail and the story that you can picture in your head instead of looking straight at a screen. After hearing about the movie and the book, if you were at Camp Green Lake would you run away or stay?
