Holes Differences

“Get off my dirt!” someone exclaims. Regrettably, Stanley doesn't get off the dirt. Then, Stanley feels a sharp pain in his neck and blood spills on the dirt. This was a major scene from the book Holes. However it got cut from the movie. It turns out there are heaps of differences between the book and the movie Holes. Some major differences between the movie and the book Holes are Stanley’s Father’s experiment, Stanley’s gash, and the kiss between Sam and Kate.

One difference between the book and the movie Holes is Stanley’s Father’s experiment. In the book, Stanley’s dad ends up making a cure for foot odor instead of making a way to make a way to recycle old shoes. He makes the cure the day after Stanley and Zero climb God’s thumb. In the movie, Stanley’s dad tries to make a cure for foot odor as his original plan. He made it as soon as the curse was broken. I think they made this change because at the end of the book they make the foot odor cure anyway. Another reason I think they made this change is to show that the curse was broken. I like the movie more because of the scene where they are really happy because the foot odor cure works.

The second difference between the book and movie Holes is the gash on Stanley’s neck. In the book, Stanley gets a gash on his neck from Zig Zag. He hit Stanley because he was on his dirt. In the movie,  Stanley never gets hit by the shovel. The only time it shows the big hole where it should have happened was when Mr.Pendanski and Mr.Sir was yelling at the campers. I think they made this change to try to keep a good rating. Another reason I think they made this change is to not have to make Stanley’s actor wear make up of blood the entire movie. I like the book more because it shows how the boys are feeling.

The final difference is the kiss between Sam and Kate. In the book, they kiss outside the rain. Hattie Parker saw them kiss and said, “God will punish you!” In the movie, they kiss inside the schoolhouse. Charles  Walker sees them and rides away to tell everyone. I think they made this change so it would be more dramatic because Charles loved Kate. I also think they did this for time because it would take too long for them to walk out into the rain and kiss. I like the book more because I think it is more dramatic because Hattie Parker seems very mad and astonished.

Stanley’s Father’s experiment, Stanley’s gash, and the kiss between Sam and Kate are some major differences between the book and the movie Holes. I really love both the book and the movie because they are very interesting and entertaining. The book is fun because you can imagine what’s going on and the movie is fun because you get to see and enjoy what’s going on. I’ll let you decide which one you like more.
