 HOLES

Book By: LOUIS SACHAR

Kate says to Trout, “You, and your children, and their children, can dig for the next hundred years, and you’ll never find it.”  This is a line in the book Holes and is my favorite line in the book. However, if you watched this movie, you would not hear that same wording in the movie. Some changes between the book Holes and the movie Holes are the chest that Zero and Stanley dug up, Sam’s death, and Kate’s death.

One difference between the book and the movie Holes is the chest that Zero and Stanley dug up. In the book, the chest had a little under a million dollars to split between Zero and Stanley. In the book, the chest is made out of metal. In the movie the chest had millions of millions of dollars to split between Zero and Stanley and there were gold and diamonds with goblets. Also, this time the chest was made out of wood. I believe that they did this so the movie ends in a better ending. I also think they changed the chest to make it look more like treasure.  I like the movie more because the chest looked more realistic but in the book the money was realistic so I like them both.

Another difference is Sam’s Death in the book and the movie. In the book Kate was in the boat in the book. Sam also got shot in the water. In the movie the boat never got wrecked into. Also, Kate watched Sam get shot in the head. They probably did this to make this more dramatic and it would take more time for Kate to get in the boat. I like the movie more because it’s more realistic and the movie version is less brutal by making it fast.

One of the most important differences is Kate Barlow’s death. In the book Kate did not commit suicide. Instead the yellow spotted lizard bit her on purpose and she died laughing out loud. They also tortured her in the book. In the movie Kate does commit suicide on purpose by grasping onto the yellow spotted lizard and getting bit on the wrist. She also never got tortured by Trout. They probably did this because they did not want to torture the actress because it would hurt the actress in many ways. I like the movie more because it was a way more dramatic scene.

The chest that Zero and Stanley dug up, Sam’s death, and Kate’s death are some of the differences between the movie and the book Holes. Even though both of them are different, I like both of them very much. However, in the movie they find millions of dollars and they never pay taxes. Most people would choose this because we are greedy humans. But, I would not because this would make our GDP drop a couple of million, which is bad for our country. Our defense and military will go down which is dangerous. So that is a bad example the movie is setting. With that being said, the book must be better since it is a better example.
