Holes Essay

Imagine a scene: over 110 years ago, Green Lake was one of the largest lakes in Texas. It always had huge parties on the 4th of July and had peach trees on the shore. After a dreadful day, everything changed. It hasn't rained since, and the lake dried up to become a camp for bad boys. All the boys can do is pray they won't get bitten by a yellow spotted lizard. This is the exact camp from the story Holes. Camp Green Lake. This is one part of the story that makes it so realistic. This is the same in the book and the movie, but there are many differences. Some major differences between the movie and the book Holes are how Barf Bag is involved, who the Warden hurts with her fingernails, and Trout Walker`s hygiene.

One difference between the book and the movie Holes is the way Barf Bag is involved. In the book, it says he gets attacked by a rattlesnake. The book doesn't explain much about him, but it says he is in the hospital. In the movie, the first thing that happened was him messing with the wild snake. He took his shoe off and started touching it with his foot, making it bite him. I believe they did this to look more dramatic. I also think it makes more sense this way. I like the way the movie did it better because more action is involved, and it gives you a hint of what the movie is like.

Another difference between the book and the movie Holes is the scene when the Warden scratches Mr. Sir. In the book, the Warden hurts both Stanley and Mr. Sir. The book makes it sound more intense, since she caused pain to both of them. In the movie, it is very different. The movie shows she was mad at Mr. Sir, but not Stanley. She smacked Mr. Sir to the ground, and let Stanley go back to his hole unharmed. I believe they made this change because it adds more action. I also believe they did this because it was faster to recreate, since Stanley was unharmed. I like the way the book did it better because it makes you able to imagine the intensity of it.

One final difference between the movie and the book Holes is the way Trout Walker looks. In the book, it explains, not shows, how Trout Walker has bad hygiene and is rich. He even explains it himself:  ̈ I take a bath every Sunday morning, whether I need to or not.¨ In the movie, he has a gold tooth. The movie shows how he has bad hygiene by showing he has a gold tooth. I think they made this change because it looks better. I also believe they did this because it shows Trout is wealthy enough to afford a gold tooth. I like the way the movie did it better because it shows, not explains.

The way Barf Bag is involved, who the Warden hurts with her fingernails, and Trout Walkers hygiene are all major differences between the movie and the book Holes. The reader might be wondering, which is better? Well, I personally like both. I think you have to try them yourself to find out. Even though there are many differences, one similarity still stands: the setting of Camp Green Lake. In the story, Mr. Sir said “This isn't a Girl Scout camp.”  What do you think?
