“You thirsty?” asked Mr. Sir. “Yes, Mr. Sir,” Stanley said gratefully. ”Well, you better get used to it. You’re going to be thirsty for the next eighteen months.” These two lines of torture for Stanley are spoken by Mr. Sir in the book and movie Holes. It is also an exact quote from the book and the same words from the movie. This is not a difference between the movie and book Holes, but there are many differences later in the story. Some major differences between the movie and the book holes are Sam’s death, the falling shoes, and Kissin Kate’s death.

One difference between the book and the movie Holes is about Clyde Livingston’s shoes. In the book, Zero put the shoes on someone’s car. They fell off and hit Stanly on the overpass. In the movie Zero takes shoes from what he thinks is a sale. He puts them on and starts walking. Later, he hears the shoes are missing and the cops chase him. He takes them off and throws them over the balcony. They hit Stanley on the head. I think they made this change because it showed how it happened. I think it was a very exciting scene. I like the movie better because you could see the shoes falling on Stanley. It shows how Zero took them.

One difference between the book and the movie Holes is Kissin Kate’s death. In the book, at Kate’s cabin, Linda and Trout break in and ask Kate for the treasure. Kate won’t tell where it is, so Linda and Trout push her out of the cabin. They won’t let her wear shoes, so she falls to the ground. Then a lizard jumps on her and bites her, and she died laughing. In the movie Trout and Linda ask for the treasure and Kate won’t tell and she never will. She grabs a lizards and makes it bite her, and died happily; she knows she will be with Sam now. I think they made these changes because of the time. It also told how Kate was not telling where the treasure was. I like the movie more because it was very intense and  more dramatic.

One difference between the book and the movie is Sam’s death. In the book Sam and Kate get in the boat and Trout crashes into them. Then he shoots Sam. In the movie Kate’s school house burns down. Then she looks for Sam, but then sees Trout shoot Sam and starts to cry. I think they made this change because it didn't take as much time as in the book Also, I think it was very heartbreaking to Kate. I like the movie more because it shows them dying separate. I like that they showed Kate’s death in a few scenes later.

The way the shoes fell, how Sam dies, and how Kate dies a happy death are all major differences between the book and the movie Holes. If you are reading this and wondering which is better, I personally like both but the movie is really good. So, you should watch and read Holes because I want to know what you like better. The movie or book?
