“Shk.” That’s the sound of shovels slicing into the dirt, and besides talking, that’s the only sound heard at Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is an alternate option to a juvenile detention. The “campers” are the characters in the story Holes. There is also a movie based on the book, and they have major differences between them. Some of these major differences between the book and the movie include the way the grandpa is involved, Sam’s death, and the way Zero gets rid of Clyde Livingston's shoes.

One of the differences from the book and the movie Holes is the grandpa. In the book, there was no grandpa. Also the dad told the stories. In the movie, the grandpa lived with Stanley. The grandpa and Stanley’s dad told the stories. The movie makers did this so the movie would make more sense. In the book, it doesn’t really make sense because there is no grandpa. I liked the movie better because it made more sense with the grandpa.

Another one of the differences is Sam’s death. In the book, Kate Barlow was in the boat with Sam when he died. Also in the book, Trout Walker crashed into the boat. In the movie, Kate Barlow was on land and saw Sam die. In the movie, there was no crash. I think the movie makers did this for less time. I also think they did this for more drama. I like the movie better because of the drama.

The final difference is Zero getting rid off the shoes. In the book, Zero put the shoes on a car. Then the car moved, and the shoes hit Stanley. In the movie, Zero threw the shoes on the overpass. After he threw the shoes, they hit Stanley. I think they changed this to make it more exciting. They also did this to make the connection easier. I like the movie more because of this connection.

The grandpa, Sam’s death, and the way Zero gets rid of the shoes, are some of the dozens of differences between the two versions of the story Holes. You're probably wondering, “With all these differences, one must be better! Well, if you’re thinking that, your wrong, because both of them are good! So, if ever given the choice between the book or the movie, choose both!
