                                                  Dare Essay

Picture this: you’re sitting in a high school classroom, and all around you people are drunk, faces ruined from smoking, and many other clear signs of drug abuse. Pretty bad, right? When the government saw just what was happening, they created the D.A.R.E. program. D.A.R.E. doesn’t only help with just drug abuse. Some of the many things it helps with are, bullying, peer pressure/media pressure, and obviously, drug abuse.

In the 1970s-80s especially, this drug abuse was extremely bad in mostly high schools. Kids were getting drunk to the point of sickness. They were getting into drunk driving accidents. All of this was making poor school performance. Kids were also smoking cigarettes, which contain paint, rocket fuel, poison, methane, and vinegar, just to name a few. This also was preventing good school performance. All of these drugs and many others in schools could and was prevented by Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or as we know it, D.A.R.E.

Peer pressure is one of the many other things besides drugs D.A.R.E. helped me stay away from. D.A.R.E. helped me, like many others, with peer pressure and media pressure. It helped me to resist doing the bad things that my “friends” do. It also helped me with identifying online predators. D.A.R.E. also helped me with saying “no” to beer cigarettes or to any drugs I might be offered. One shouldn't have to look too far to see that D.A.R.E. helps with all bad things that you might encounter in life.

D.A.R.E. also personally helped me with bullying. It helped me report bullying. It told me to report when, where, how, who, and, why. You can’t report bullying without being able to identify it, which is exactly what D.A.R.E. can help with. It told me to look for if it is teasing or being mean, and if it is being done multiple times. D.A.R.E. also helped me to stay away from bullying and catch myself when I am doing it.

Pressure, drug abuse, and bullying are just three of the many things D.A.R.E. can help with. Now, because of D.A.R.E., there are far less drunk kids, fewer ruined faces, and a happier school system all around. So the next time someone asks you to take some drug or do something hurtful, think Dare!

I pledge to never take drugs, never to do hurtful things, and to never do anything without thinking first.
