                                           The Algonquin

“I would very much like to see whoever created us, who made us to be in this world, understand us and help us to gain the right way. Because we can’t do it alone. You need to act together.” This quote was once said by the Algonquin Native American William Commanda.  The Algonquin tribe was a very kind and thoughtful tribe. One can learn about how they lived by looking at where they were located, how they met their basic needs, their customs, and beliefs.

The Algonquin tribe was located in the southeastern part of Canada. Today, this land is called Quebec and Ontario, also known as the “Canadian Shield.”  It was very hot and humid in this area. The Algonquin lived near thick forests, big hills, and planes. This land is close to the Ottawa River. They used water from rivers for drinking water and daily life.  Overall, Canada was a good place to live because they had plentiful, natural resources.

The Algonquin people lived in round solid huts. They were called Wigwams. The wigwams were made of sticks. The sticks were bent upside down to form a “U” shape. They ate wild plants, such as berries, nuts, and roots. They also ate corn, deer, moose, and fish. The Algonquin people also tapped Maple trees that was used to make maple syrup, and medicines. The Algonquin wore headbands, dresses, cloaks, and leggings. The clothes were decorated with bright, beautiful colors, beads and patterns. The Algonquin tribe were very resourceful by using resources among them.

The Algonquin had many customs and beliefs.  One of the Algonquians’ beliefs was something called “The Great Spirit.” They believed there were good and bad spirits in the world.  These customs and beliefs make the Algonquin tribe very fascinating. One of the Algonquins’ customs was to make baskets. The baskets were made of birch bark, which had beautiful patterns. These baskets were made to carry food. Another interesting custom was the Algonquin made their canoes. The canoes were made from stretched birch bark over a wooden frame. One of the Algonquians’ beliefs was something called “The Great Spirit.” They believed there were good, and bad spirits in the world.  These customs and beliefs make the Algonquin tribe very fascinating.

In conclusion, the Algonquin people were a very hardworking tribe.  They lived in hot, humid areas where they were forced to meet their basic needs. They had very unique  customs and beliefs that helped contribute to their daily life. There are still Algonquins alive, and they speak their native Algonquian language. Hopefully, their tribe will grow stronger and bigger.
